HISTORY
Black River was founded in 1996 by two groups of engineers. One group specialized in advanced airborne sensing and weapon systems. They teamed with a second group of software engineers who were experts in real-time, massively parallel embedded computing systems. This set of unique founding partners enabled Black River to immediately develop applied multisensor detection, tracking and fusion solutions for operational infrared, hyperspectral, electro-optical, electronic warfare, signals intelligence, and radar. The systems engineers developed architectures, signal processing techniques, association, tracking and fusion techniques, and the software engineers implemented them in real-time, state-of-the-art parallel processing systems.
30 years later, technology has evolved. Machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science engineering enhance our capability to sense our environment and infer patterns of life, courses of action, and the intent of our adversaries. High performance graphics cards, software defined radios, large scale enterprise systems, the internet of things, various cloud services, and the access to and the analysis of big data have enabled sensing and sensemaking systems to solve the previously unsolvable. While maintaining our core applied engineering capability, Black River has become a leader in rapidly fielding advanced sensing solutions that utilize the latest emerging technology. We specialize in developing advanced surveillance and targeting sensing products, fielding them quickly and supporting them in the field.
Our engineering business performs advanced research and development for various government agencies, and our production team specializes in transitioning this technology quickly into products we field and support in operational environments. Black River’s recognized subject matter expertise includes counter UAS, signals intelligence, and advanced surveillance radar.
To accommodate the next generation of partners, Black River has evolved from a closely held company to a full employee-owned business. In January 2022, the company transitioned to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). After a year of eligibility, all our employees become stockholders in the ESOP trust. This shared ownership ensures that everyone is engaged and committed to the company’s success, and that no single individual is the sole beneficiary of the company’s success.
Black River has evolved from a handful of engineers performing advanced research to a firm with 100+ staff members and shareholders who actively research, develop, produce, field and support some of the most sophisticated systems in the world.

All of us at Black River, pride ourselves in quickly and cost-effectively delivering value to our customers. What makes us different than other engineering firms? First and foremost, it’s our people. Black River staff members have some of the highest level of subject matter expertise in the world, but here it’s not about the individual. We hire excellent engineers who are engineers because they want to be engineers. They enjoy tinkering, fixing, inventing, solving problems and they take pride in what they produce. They do it as a team. From our investment in infrastructure to investigate research transition techniques to our employee-owned environment everything we do is about integrating excellent engineering capability into teams that research, develop, transition, produce, field, support and iterate products solve problems.
